The Biggest Haircut Trends You’ll Be Seeing in 2022

Grab your straightening iron — or don’t. Both sleek and untouched textures will be thriving in the new year.

The Biggest 2022 Hair Trends — Hairstylist Advice

With salons seeing far more clients in 2021 than they did in 2020, an increasingly vaccinated population means 2022 will likely see even more of us visiting our favorite hairstylists with more frequency. But because things still seem precarious, it’s not unusual to want to seek change in some controllable way — like your haircut. “An external change can be a simple and easy way to signify a transition that is internally more complex and harder to articulate otherwise,” therapist Nikki Nachum explained to Allure. “A new hairstyle becomes almost like an announcement to both yourself and the outer world that something is changing in your life.”

That said, some of the biggest hair trends of the last year are seamlessly flowing into 2022 — perhaps a sign of sticking to the comfort of what we know. “It has been a crazy year trying to recover from the pandemic,” says West Hollywood-based hairstylist Kamara Brown. “It’s no secret that many women are looking for ways to get the longest wear out of their hairstyles.” And whether you’re seeking a dramatically different new style or you just want some minor trendy touchups to your current look, top stylists are eager to share their visions of what the trends in hair salons will look like over the next few seasons — and they don’t always agree.

Chris Appleton, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez’s go-to stylist, tells Allure that after all the effortless and natural looks of the last two low-key-beauty years, “people are ready to try a little harder and add some extra ‘oomph,'” by switching to sleek, straight styles and tight ponytails and braids. But Brown sees things differently: “There’s going to be a lot of ditching the traditional pulled-back look,” she says, believing there will be plenty of untamed texture in 2022.

People will also be ditching a lot of length, according to Los Angeles-based hairstylist Erinn Courtney. “The types of hairstyles I predict will be big in 2022 are short cuts — anything from chic bobs to big chops,” she tells Allure. “Coming out of the pandemic, I think everyone wants to be their healthiest self, and that includes their hair.”

While scrolling through this list, keep in mind what features on your face you want to enhance — instead of your face shape — says hairstylist Wes Sharpton, who works out of New York City’s Hairstory Studio. “You and your stylist can create a game plan to make sure these things are framed in the right way,” he adds. “We need to make it a positive experience and celebrate you, which is the most important thing at the end of the day.”

  • Classic Bob
  • When it comes to short-hair trends, both Fekkai founder Frederic Fekkai tell Allure they anticipate a huge bob moment in the coming year. “I predict that short bobs with or without bangs for straight hair will be big for 2022,” Fekkai says. Selena Gomez is clearly leading the charge, recently returning to the classic chin-length look, and other stylists are singing the praises of specifically the sliced bob, which is a tiny bit longer in front. “If you have finer hair, this helps create a cleaner line,” Harry Josh explains.
  • Elizabeth Olsen poses in a black blazer

  • Wispy Bangs
  • Curtain bangs aren’t going anywhere just yet, and blunt ones are more than welcome, but if your temptation to try fringe comes with a reluctance to go too heavy, you’ll welcome the wipsy-bangs trend. Alex Brown, stylist and owner of Chicago’s Space by Alex Brown, anticipates this ‘90s-esque look will be big in 2022. “We will see lots of wispy bangs with layers around the face, creating more movement and texture,” she says. Think: Elizabeth Olsen’s look here. “Wispy bangs can add amazing softness and movement to long, thick hair.”

  • Braids
  • Nearly every stylist Allure asked about hair trends was eager for a big braid year. “People who have never considered braids are wanting to experiment and have low-maintenance hair,” Courtney says. Brown agrees, saying Zoe Kravitz-esque wavy braids are definitely in style — and Zendaya’s long, box-braid look is a perfect example of how the braids can be dressed up or down.
  • “Easy, carefree braids make a great addition to your style arsenal,” says Gina Scipioni, director of education for Neuma, who says they’re perfect for both workdays and date nights. But if you aren’t ready to commit to a full head of pretty plaits, Scipioni recommends working one into whatever you’ve already got going on. “Just add an accent braid and you’ll be all set for 2022.”

  • Natural Waves
  • Wavy-haired friends, it’s your time to shine — and we don’t mean by flat-ironing your hair into reflective oblivion. This will be the year to air-dry and fly. “Hair in 2022 is about celebrating your natural texture. It’s no longer about hot tools to straighten or curl hair,” Fekkai tells Allure. “Embrace what you already have.” Because what you have doesn’t need to be straightened by a flatiron or defined by a curling wand to be gorgeous — it already is, as exemplified by Natasha Lyonne’s incredible texture.
  • Jennifer Aniston poses on the red carpet in a strapless black gown

  • Choppy Bends
  • Delray Beach, Florida, stylist Chloé Swigert tells Allure that her clients have been increasingly asking for an easy way to add texture and movement to their long, straight hair. Her answer: a much shorter layer with pieces that pop out a bit when waved. And there’s no need to go wild with your curling wand to make it happen. Just a flick here and there creates an “effortless, natural, beachy texture,” like Jennifer Aniston’s.
  • Jennifer Lopez poses in a high ponytail and red dress
  • Getty Images
  • 6/17
  • Sleek High Ponytail
  • Appleton is all about putting in a little extra effort this year, which means retiring the messy low ponies and opting for the sleek, high ponytails he often creates for Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian. “Many people are looking for something a little more structured and ‘fancy,'” he tells Allure, and a high ponytail with perfectly smooth base achieves that without doing an elaborate updo.
  • Lizzo wears three large clips in her hair at the Grammy red carpet

  • Accessories Galore
  • No matter your chosen 2022 hairstyle, one hair trend will rule them all: accessories. “If it can go in your hair, it should,” Scipioni tells Allure. “Anything from headbands, clips, and scarfs to even hair bows were seen through Fashion Week and on the red carpet, helping us know exactly how to style for 2022.” We give most of the credit to Lizzo for really igniting this look, as she regularly adorns her hair with barrettesbutterfly clips, and designer doodads that add sparkle to her constantly-changing hairstyle.
  •
  • Kaia Gerber wearing a shoulderlength hairstyle with layers

  • 8/17
  • Lots of Layers
  • “In 2022 I have a feeling I’ll be adding a lot more layers to the hair,” Brown says. “This haircut has much shorter layering around the face — think a longer curtain bang — as well as shorter layering throughout.” Kaia Gerber’s cut is a prime example, though straighter her is not the only texture that works with this look. “This style is beautiful when worn with natural textures and is very easy to maintain,” Brown adds, noting that it’s a great way to noticeably change up your style without chopping off all of your hair.
  • Rihanna from the back and side wearing a long cornrow hairstyle

  • 9/17
  • Intricate Cornrows
  • We’ve already established braids are going to have a hell of a year, but it’s beautifully detailed cornrows that will make this an epic year for hairstyles. “Another style that I think will be a huge trend in 2022 are small and intricate cornrow styles,” Courtney tells Allure. “We’re just beginning to see the artistry that is cornrows, and I predict that it’ll boom in the next year with all kinds of crazy shapes, styles, and colors.” Rihanna helped drop the hint that this was coming when she wore a maze-like design that — yeah, we’re gonna say it — was a-maze-ing.
  • Dua Lipa with long straight hair wearing sparkling pink gown

  • 10/17
  • Middle Part
  • We realize we may re-spark a generational war, but a middle part really is the currently cool way to split your hair. “Gen Z has already made it clear that side parts are out — and even go as far to say they’re ‘cheugy’ — and middle parts are here for 2022,” says Appleton, who is, in fact, a millennial. He says it’s specifically streamlined hair like Dua Lipa’s that he’s envisioning with the evenly divided style. “Sleek, straight hair has been out of the spotlight for a bit, and it’s ready to make a comeback.”

  • ’80s Curls
  • If you, like us, have been waiting for the return of big, Taylor Dayne-esque ‘80s curls, 2022 is going to be an extremely satisfying hairstyle year for you. “There is going to be a revival of big ’80s hair,” Fekkai promises, and especially “big wand curls,” according to Brown. If, like Sarah Hyland, your own hair may not get voluminous enough on its own, you may want to consider extensions. “I used Russian virgin curly extensions using microbeaded individuals, which is a non-damaging technique using no heat or glue,” Violet Teriti told Allure about how she created Hyland’s look. “It can stay in her hair for up to three months, she can wear her hair up easily, she can wash and leave it air-dried and it will curl exactly as the hair is naturally.”

  • Tendrils
  • They’re not just for ’90s proms anymore. Tendrils, which are two pieces on each side of the part that hang out of an updo or ponytail, will be framing many a face in 2022. “They can be braided, straight, or slightly waved,” Brown says. “This adds a bit of style and chicness to any bun or second- or third-day dirty hair.” And clearly, Ciara is leading the charge.
  • Kim Kardashian in sunglasses wearing a long braid

  • Tightly Pulled-Back Braid
  • Yep, yet another kind of braid will be front-and-center in 2022 — or rather, back-and-center. Both Fekkai and Appleton say a super glossy, pulled-back braid is due for trend glory. “The messy, boho braid trend has come and gone — it’s now time for the sleek and cohesive braid,” Appleton tells Allure, noting Kim Kardashian’s penchant for the clean, often extra-long look. “It looks very put-together and classy.”

  • Big Chop
  • “Whether it’s going from long lengths to a shag or even a pixie, people are ready to let it go,” shares hairstylist Christin Brown. Now, doing the big chop doesn’t mean you have to get rid of allyour hair. Here, Sanaa Lathan’s cut is a tiny bit longer at the top and tapered at the sides, instead of all one low length. “A nice amount of my clients this year went with big chopping their hair to either a pixie or a tapered look,” Brown continues, saying it can feel so liberating. Just be sure when you hit the salon chair, you speak to your stylist about what kind of pixie would look best for your face shape, she adds.

  • Mullets
  • We’ve been seeing mullets everywhere lately. The modern-day version of the cut that defined the ’80s is a little more chill, though. “[We’re getting] a lot more of these, especially in slightly longer, less severe versions,” says hairstylist Bryce Scarlett. Look to Doja Cat’s 2021 Grammys mullet, which has a soft wave that frames her face beautifully.
  • And yes, any face shape can wear a mullet with confidence. “For a more full face, the modern mullet is the way to go,” notes hairstylist Sally Hershberger. “The hair framed around the face will perfectly complement this face shape.”

  • Modern Shag
  • Taylor Swift wore the modern shag for all of 2020 and well into 2021 — and we’re ready for it to continue its reign. No one is happier about the return of the shag than Hershberger, though. “[It’s] been one of my longstanding favorite hair trends,” she says. But this cut isn’t for anyone who is scared of layering. “[It requires] a ton of layers, which help to create the texture for a cool, lived-in look.”
  • However, the cut is amazing for those who are all about embracing their natural texture. “Even for curly-haired girlswho might be too scared to go with adding bangs, this cut works with all curl,” says Julien Farel, creative director and owner of the Julien Farel Restore Salon and Spa at New York City’s Regency Hotel.

Healthy Hair Tips

It can be difficult to keep your hair looking healthy in between salon visits. Here are some tips for keeping your hair healthy no matter what your hairstyle is.

Your Hair is a Window to Your Health

There is more than likely something going on if your hair is dry, brittle, or looks lifeless. If you eat well and sleep through the night and haven’t gone totally crazy with over coloring or harsh products, then there could be a health problem.

Not getting the right nutrients, like vitamins and minerals, is the most common issue. This can be fixed by adjusting your diet to include more protein, biotin, and green vegetables. B and D vitamins are important for your hair so make sure you are getting the right amount.

Drink Plenty of Water

Another way to keep your hair healthy is to drink plenty of water every day. Water helps to keep your body hydrated, consequently keeping your hair and skin functioning flawlessly. It is recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water daily.

Scalp Massage

Blood circulation into your hair follicles is also important. You can accomplish this by giving yourself a scalp massage a few minutes before bed or prior to shampooing your hair.

Just use your fingers to rub your scalp in a circular motion for a few minutes. We also carry Davines Natural Tech products and have treatments available to help circulate your scalp and or take care of any scalp issues.

Sun Damage

Hair is prone to damage from the sun just like your skin. If you plan to spend the whole day in the sun, make sure you cover it up.

It is okay to let your natural color get a little lighter from the sun, but if you have colored your hair with products, you don’t want to expose it to too much sunlight because the color will fade. We have a Davines line called Su that will help with all of your outdoor hair worries.

Avoid Shampoos with Sulfates

Washing your hair with a good natural shampoo is one of the best things you can do. This means that you should avoid any shampoo that has sulfates or other harsh chemicals.

Contact Très Bella Salon to get a good product that is worthy of your hair. All of our products are sulfate and paraben free.

Call us for a consultation, we would love to help you with your beauty.

Finding the Perfect Haircut for Your Face Shape

Your hair does more than just turn heads all around you; it can also highlight your face. Depending on if your cut is a good one or a bad one, this can be positive or negative. We believe that finding the perfect cut makes your entire body look great. We have some tips for choosing a haircut that will draw attention to your best features.

Round Face

If your face is rounder, you can go any length if you have the right haircut.

• Short – Go all the way short with spiky layers all around the crown of the head.

• Medium – Long bob with wisps around the neck in order to slim the face.

• Long – Layer at the jawline with barely there pieces to make the hair seem fuller rather than the face.

Heart Shaped Face

If your face is wider at the top and tends to come to a point at your chin, then try one of these looks on for size.

• Short – Pixie cut with short top layers, clipped evenly on nape and sides.

• Medium – Collarbone length hair with uniform layers and sweeping bangs.

• Long – Full bangs and curly sections of long hair.

Oval/Long Face

If your face is longer and more of an oval shape, try one of these jaw-dropping styles.

• Short – Angle a bob with chin-hugging, short layers.

• Medium – Shoulder length sleek blowout.

• Long – Sweeping fringe and a retro texture paired with long strands.

Square Face

If your face has a tendency to look squarer, try one of these cuts that will highlight your best features.

• Short – Subtle bangs over a short layered bob.

• Medium – Sweeping bangs with shoulder-length layers.

• Long – Slight bangs at the cheekbone with collarbone-skimming length.

We Can Help

If you aren’t sure what your face type is or how to choose the right haircut or color to highlight your best assets, our experts will help you choose a color and cut that make you feel great about the way you look.

Très Bella Salon will continue to do our part in slowing the spread of Covid-19.

Although the governor has lifted the restrictions, we will continue to require masks and social distancing for guests, while in the salon.  Since our team is unable to social distance while doing services, we feel it is important to everyone in the salon to feel safe.   Although many celebrated governor Abbott’s recent announcement, coinciding with Texas Independence Day, there are still some living with concern due to personal or family members’ compromised health circumstances.  We feel strongly about keeping these protocols in place for the protection of all.  As spring break and Easter approach, we will be monitoring COVID-19 numbers and vaccination percentages.

The Très Bella team joins all Americans in the hope of making COVID-19 a thing of the past.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

How does your skin change from age 20-60+? If your not sure what products you need be sure to ask our esthetician Kennedy, she can recommend the necessary products to look your best.

In your 20’s you start seeing visible changes, collagen breakdown increases 1% per year we need to make sure we always wear sunscreen (spf 30). Look for active ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides they will give the skin added moisture to prevent dehydration. Hydromemory Facial would be great to add the moisture needed.

In your 30’s you start seeing upper face lines appear, such as crows feet, vertical lines between the eyes and horizontal lines on the forehead. Make sure to use an antioxidant such as a vitamin C. We have some great ones to use in our comfortzone: Active Purness Fluid, Renight Cream, Sublime Skin Peel Pads, Renight Mask, Renight Oil, and the skin regimen line.

In your 40’s fine lines and wrinkles become more prominent, skin begins to lose moisture and elasticity and can become dull, and sunspots along with hyperpigmentation become a concern. If you haven’s started an exfoiliator and anti aging serum its a great time to start. Start Incorporating retinol in your night time routine, along with serums, and a gentle glycolic acid. Try our Retinol Booster and our Active Pureness Corrector. Regular facials will help with skin circulation, the Sublime facial with a Peel will really help exfoilate. Ask about our new skin exfoliation service.

In your 50+, we start seeing more lines around your eyes, sun exposed areas, dryness, dullness and the skins texture and tone change. Menopause can cause the collagen to breakdown even more, along with the reduction of superficial oil production. Leaving the skin crying for moisture. All of the products and facials recommended for your 40’s are still great preventives to use but add an eye cream such as Sublime Eye Cream. If you need to minimize uneven skin tone make sure you are using a very hydrating moisturizer such as the Hydromemory Cream. Hydromemory Facials as well getting regular Sublime Peel Facials. What a difference you will feel on the texture and brightness of your skin.

Call us 830-249-8938 to request a custom Signature Facial or some expert advise from our esthetician.

The 11 Biggest Haircut Trends of 2021

The mullet is making a comeback.

Calling all opinionated beauty lovers: We want to know which products you can’t live without! Take our annual poll to pick the top hair, makeup, nail, and skin-care products that deserve our coveted Readers’ Choice seal.

Believe it or not, 2020 was a big year for haircuts — COVID-19 be damned. In the spring, we witnessed countless folks use salon closures as an excuse to play hairstylist, giving themselves bangslayers, and buzz cuts. And once businesses were back open, people sprinted to their beloved stylists for both touch-ups and full-blown transformations. The bob was super popular, as was the pixie cut and shaved heads. On the flip side though, low-maintenance looks — like long bangs and the one-length cut — were seen everywhere, too.

Despite the obvious hurdles of the pandemic, our favorite celebrities still managed to serve up haircut inspiration all year long. Even during lockdown, many A-listers got creative and did their own cuts and dye jobs at home (looking at you, Bella Hadid), and when salons re-opened, many were quick to see their hairstylists for a post-quarantine cut. Due to the standstill the world has been under for nearly a year, a lot of haircut trends from last year are pouring into 2021, though there are some new ones that have emerged. So, enough chit chat: To find out which haircuts reign supreme, just keep on scrolling.

  • Selfie of Barbie Ferreira mullet

The modern-day version of the cut that defined the ’80s is a little more chill, though. “[We’re getting] a lot more of these, especially in slightly longer, less severe versions,” says hairstylist Bryce Scarlett. Look to Barbie Ferreira’s mullet, which has a soft wave that frames her face beautifully.

Getty Images2/33MulletLike many mullets, Zendaya’s has a ton of texture, but it is brought out through the actual cut of the hair, as opposed to a natural pattern. Here, the hair in the back flows straight down, instead of bending or curling. “For a more full face, the modern mullet is the way to go,” notes hairstylist Sally Hershberger. “The hair framed around the face will perfectly compliment this face shape.”ADVERTISEMENT
  • Rihanna in Black and white. she is looking over her shoulder and has a mullet.
Rihanna/Instagram3/33MulletNo one pulls off any hairstyle better than Rihanna can, and that includes a mullet. Hers is done with baby bangs, which in themselves can be tricky to wear. If you’re thinking of getting this type of look, heed the words of hairstylist Derek Yuen. “I generally like to cut short bangs after the hair has been dried straight down,” he previously told Allure

  • Photo of a model with short brunette hair. Her hair is cut into a bob and there is some swoopy texture
Getty Images4/33Short, Swoopy BobShort bobs do require a decent degree of maintenance, but we’re still seeing cropped cuts like this trending right now. One version of the bob hairstylist Sunnie Brook Jones says will dominate the season are “blunt and bouncy with a deep sweep. This can hit at the jaw or longest mid-neck depending on how brave you are and the texture and density of your hair.”Hairstylist Clariss Rubenstein is partial to a particular iteration of this style. “I love it around chin length,” she says. “Also make sure there is a heavy weight line around the perimeter of the cut — it should be nice and blunt at the bottom.”
  • photo of a blonde model with curly hair cut into a short bob with bangs. she has on red lipstick and a bright pink...
Getty Images5/33Short, Swoopy BobAnother version of this style includes “lots of messy texture and fringe bangs,” according to hairstylist Sally Hershberger — even better if you’ve got some natural texture, as we see here on this model. Her bangs, which fall just above her eyes, are cut right after the first two bends in her curl pattern, which creates that bouncy, body-full look.

Getty Images6/33Short, Swoopy BobKaia Gerber’s short, flowy bob is one of our definite favorites. When you’re sitting in the salon chair to get this particular style, Jones says to “ask your stylist to keep the ends blunt with just a bit of softness by chipping into the ends.”

Hairstylist Glenn Ellis sees the trend going into the new year. “I’ve had clients recently that have been wanting more of a pixie,” he says. “It’s low maintenance in the sense that you don’t have to spend a ton of time blow-drying your hair. All my clients call this the ‘wash and go’ haircut because you can leave the house with it wet and it dries perfectly on its own.”

Courtesy of Instagram/@taylorswift18/33Modern ShagNo one is happier about the return of the shag than Hershberger. “[It’s] been one of my longstanding favorite hair trends,” she says. But this cut isn’t for anyone who is scared of layering. “[It requires] a ton of layers, which help to create the texture for a cool, lived-in look.” So what does the cut entail? “Short hair with a gentle nod to a mullet works with softer edges and movement,” explains Philip Downing, TIGI creative and education director. “This gives the… haircut a feminine softness and versatile approach.” Taylor Swift has been wearing the modern shag for all of 2020 — and based on recent photos, it looks like she’ll take be taking the trend into the new year, too.

Depeyrot likes this cut because of what it can do if your hair is pretty thin. “It’s great if you have fine hair because it gives the illusion of fuller hair,” he explains. “It’s also very versatile because you can make it edgy or classic and it works with a fringe.”
